Ideal video size for Reels, Shorts and TikTok
Publishing in the wrong format kills reach before you start. Reels, Shorts and TikTok are built for full-screen vertical video — a horizontal clip shows up small and letterboxed, and the algorithm serves it to fewer people. Here are the numbers that matter.
Aspect ratio: 9:16 vertical
All three formats use vertical 9:16, filling the phone screen. The recommended resolution is 1080×1920 pixels.
Horizontal (16:9) and square (1:1) video performs badly in these placements and sharply reduces reach.
Ideal duration
- Instagram Reels: 30 to 90 seconds performs best.
- YouTube Shorts: up to 180 seconds. Past that ceiling YouTube stops classifying the vertical video as a Short and it drops out of the Shorts feed entirely, with no warning.
- TikTok: 30 to 90 seconds usually retains best.
- General rule: one complete idea, no padding. Cut the rest.
Captions are mandatory
Most viewing happens on mute. Without burned-in captions the message is lost. Always include captions synced to the speech.
FeedChurch generates clips already in 9:16 with automatic captions — the right size and format for all three apps, with no manual adjustment, and already inside the Shorts duration ceiling.

Can I use the same clip on all three platforms?
Yes. Vertical 9:16 with captions works on Reels, Shorts and TikTok — just respect each one’s duration limit.
Do I have to reframe the horizontal sermon video myself?
Not manually. FeedChurch converts to vertical 9:16 automatically, keeping the important part of the frame.
